DRIVING CHANGE

WITH COMPASSION

Whether you’re running a business – or a country – human-centric leadership and the ability to see the world through others’ eyes is a critical skill if you want to drive change, says Linda Buckley, Head of Learning Experience and Executive Education Director at Henley Business School Africa, who has a Master’s degree on the topic from the University of Reading in the UK.

In today’s hyperconnected world, the leadership styles of prominent figures offer valuable lessons, particularly as these styles become increasingly extreme. On one side, leaders like Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump exemplify authoritarianism. A recent study from the Political Research Exchange suggests that such leaders are often perceived as less trustworthy and emotionally stable compared to their more authoritarian counterparts. In contrast, leaders like New Zealand’s former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris embody empathy, authenticity, and a commitment to equity—qualities that are gaining recognition and respect globally.

IN TODAY’S HYPERCONNECTED WORLD, THE LEADERSHIP STYLES OF PROMINENT FIGURES OFFER VALUABLE LESSONS, PARTICULARLY AS THESE STYLES BECOME INCREASINGLY EXTREME

Empathy, often considered a ‘soft’ skill, is now crucial in both politics and business. Forbes Coaches Council member Paul E. Padda emphasises that leaders must evaluate situations from others’ perspectives to address conflict, which fosters trust and improves relationships.

To cultivate empathetic leadership, consider these three approaches:

  1. Know Yourself: In a world filled with distractions, maintaining authentic connections is essential. Sally Susman of Pfizer emphasises the importance of reflecting on our interactions to avoid eroding relationships and trust. Effective leaders like Harris foster trust by sharing personal stories and challenges, creating relatability and openness. This approach requires leaders to slow down, practice self-awareness, and engage genuinely with others.

  2. Practice Respect: Empathy means valuing others. MIT’s Sherry Turkle outlines four rules for empathy, including respecting others’ feelings, committing to understanding them, and listening actively to others, fostering a sense of community. True empathy comes from listening, engaging with discomfort, and demonstrating respect and commitment to others’ experiences.

  3. Ask, Don’t Tell: Edgar Schein, in Humble Inquiry, highlights the power of asking questions over issuing orders, which encourages collaboration. By seeking others’ opinions, leaders can create a more inclusive environment.

Empathy-driven leadership is increasingly recognised as vital for reengaging teams that thrive on trust. It builds and effective collaboration is achieved.
