Hay Fever

As Spring unveils the splendour of blooming flowers, warmer days and long walks, the season also heralds the return of an unwelcome visitor by the name of hay fever.

share:

AAlso known as allergic rhinitis, hay fever is a common allergic reaction to airborne particles, particularly pollen from grass, trees and flowers. While harmless to most people, they cause an overreaction in the immune systems of millions of South Africans this time of the year… every year! And, it’s the body’s reaction to these allergens that makes life unbearable bringing on horrible symptoms including persistent sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses and congestion.

How hay fever works is that when these pesky allergens enter your nasal passages, the body releases histamines to fend them off which leads to inflammation and results in those nasty symptoms. Unfortunately, environmental conditions such as increased air pollution in urban areas also exacerbate the symptoms.

However, relief is at hand! These useful tips will help you deal effectively with hay fever this season:

  1. Limit outdoor exposure by staying indoors on windy or high-pollen days. And especially during peak pollen times which are early mornings and late afternoons. Try to keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible to minimise how much pollen enters your home.
  2. Pollen can cling to your clothes, skin, and hair. A shower and change of clothing as soon as you get home after any outdoor activity gets rid of this allergen fast.
  3. Use a good over-the-counter antihistamine to block the release of histamines in your body to ease the symptoms. Your local pharmacist will be able to recommend a good brand that provides all day relief.
  4. Finally, invest in an air purifier that will improve the air quality in your home by helping to filter out pollen and other allergens.

This time of the year is about getting out and enjoying all that nature has to offer. With some simple lifestyle adjustments and a good antihistamine from your local pharmacy, hay fever no longer has to stop you from making the most of this magical season.
