IIn gardens across Johannesburg, Spring with its spectacle of colours and textures is the season the green-fingered amongst us have been eagerly awaiting. But, what about those who have limited space or who don’t have a garden at all? Fear not, all is not lost.
That’s because, where container plants are concerned, you can quickly and easily adorn your outdoor spaces with uplifting colours, textures, scents and sprays, transforming patios, balconies and windowsills into lush retreats.

Geraniums
Geraniums stand out as a classic choice for South African gardeners. A plant that thrives in the warmth of Spring into Summer, richly coloured flowers in hues of pink, red and white – coupled with their ease of care – make them a favourite. They do require regular watering, but that actually makes them perfect for container gardening, where their needs can be closely monitored.
Petunias
Offering a cascade of vibrant colours ranging from pure white to deep purple, often with captivating patterns, Petunias bloom profusely throughout the season, requiring only a sunny spot and occasional deadheading to remove spent flowers. They’re ideal for hanging baskets or containers, where their lush foliage and blooms can spill over the edges, producing a stunning display.
Begonias
Begonias, meanwhile, are renowned for their impressive blossoms and tolerance of shady conditions – something of a rarity among these seasonal flowers. With a variety of types – from the wax begonias with their glossy leaves to the frilly-edged camellia begonias – there’s one to suit any container garden. They prefer partial shade, so are versatile for different garden spots.
Fuchsias
Another shade-loving plant are Fuchsias – you’ll recognise that unique, bell-shaped flower that dangles elegantly from the stem. Fuchsias are available in a myriad of colours, including pink, purple and white, and will flourish even in cooler parts of the garden.
Lavender
Lavender will bring both colour and fragrance to your container garden. This hardy herb prefers full sun and, like so many on this list, requires well-drained soil, making it suited to container life. Its aromatic flowers and foliage can help deter pests, while its abiliy to attract bees and butterflies will add life and movement to your space.
Snapdragons
Adding height and drama to containers with their tall spikes of brightly coloured flowers, Snapdragons thrive in cooler summer climates and can bloom well into autumn if pruned regularly.

Marigolds
Marigolds are a must-have for any seasonal container garden, with their bright orange, yellow and red blooms. Not only do they add a burst of colour, but also have pest-repellent properties, protecting your garden naturally.
They also prosper in full sun, and with regular watering, are low maintenance.

Herbs
Finally, don’t dismiss the idea of a hooray of herbs. The likes of basil, thyme and mint are excellent choices for container gardens, providing fresh flavours for Spring to Summer cooking. Most herbs prefer full sun and good soil where the water percolates.
With minimal care, these and other container plants can provide a season-long display of beauty, making every corner of your garden a celebration of the season, even if you’re only planning things now.
Very quickly, you can create your personal oasis!
